Sissu to Keylong: Distance, Route & What to See

By the hosts at Hotel Lake Side Inn, Sissu · ~30 km · ~1 hr

Sissu to Keylong is a short, easy ~30 km drive of about an hour along the sealed Lahaul valley highway. Keylong is the district headquarters of Lahaul & Spiti — the biggest town in the valley — so it is where you go from Sissu for a proper market, shawls and woollens, an ATM, the Tandi petrol pump, and monasteries like Kardang across the river. It makes an easy half-day trip from a base in Sissu, and this guide covers the route, the stops enroute, and what is worth your time once you arrive.

The drive in brief

From Sissu you follow the valley-floor highway west, tracing the Chandra river, and reach Keylong in about an hour. The road is tarred the whole way and genuinely easy — none of the rough, high-pass driving you meet on the Spiti or Leh roads. It is a scenic run past terraced fields, small Lahauli villages and the confluence at Tandi, with snow peaks lining both sides of the valley. For most of the year this is one of the most relaxed drives in the region.

Because it is so short, you do not need to move hotels to see Keylong — plenty of our guests keep their room in Sissu, spend a morning in the town, and are back by afternoon. For how Sissu compares with staying in Keylong or Jispa, see our Sissu vs Keylong vs Jispa comparison.

The Keylong market

If Sissu is the quiet lakeside base, Keylong is where you actually shop. The main bazaar is the commercial heart of Lahaul — a compact strip of shops selling Kullu and Lahauli shawls, woollen caps and socks, jackets and blankets, alongside everyday provisions, dry fruits, medicines and small eateries. For travellers who under-packed for the cold (it happens often), it is the best place in the valley to buy a warm layer, and prices are fairer than the tourist shops back in Manali.

It is also the practical town: ATMs, government offices, a hospital and bus connections are all here, which is why locals from villages like Sissu come in for anything they cannot get closer to home. If you need cash before heading deeper into Lahaul, top up in Keylong — our ATM & petrol network guide explains why you should not rely on finding a machine further on.

Kardang Monastery

The single best-known sight near Keylong is Kardang Monastery, the largest and most important gompa in Lahaul, perched across the Bhaga river with sweeping views back over the town and valley. It belongs to the Drukpa Kagyu school and holds old thangkas, manuscripts and a large prayer wheel; the walk or short drive up to it is part of the appeal. It pairs naturally with a Keylong market morning — town first, monastery after — and we cover it in full on our dedicated Kardang Monastery page.

Tandi sangam & the last petrol pump

About two-thirds of the way to Keylong you pass Tandi, where the Chandra and Bhaga rivers meet in a broad, dramatic confluence to become the Chandrabhaga. It is a genuinely striking spot and worth a brief stop for photos. But Tandi matters for a second, very practical reason: its petrol pump is the last reliable fuel you will find before the long, empty runs toward Leh and Spiti. There is no pump in Sissu, so if you are combining a Keylong trip with onward travel, fill up here. Even for a simple return trip, it is a handy top-up point.

Sissu or Keylong as a base?

People often ask whether to sleep in Keylong instead. Our honest take: Keylong is the more functional town — more shops, the district services — but it sits above the river with a busier, more workaday feel. Sissu is the prettier, calmer base, right by its own lake and waterfall, and it is only an hour away, so you lose nothing by staying with us and treating Keylong as an easy day trip. You get quiet lakeside mornings and the town whenever you need it.

From our mountain-view rooms you can drive in for the market and Kardang, then come back to a hot pure-veg dinner without hunting for a place to eat. If you want to talk through an itinerary or check road conditions before you set out, just get in touch — we do this drive all the time and are happy to help you plan the day.
