Sissu Lake: Visitor Guide & Where to Stay

By the hosts at Hotel Lake Side Inn, Sissu · A 2-minute walk from the lake

Sissu Lake is a small, glacier-fed lake on the Sissu valley floor in Lahaul, famous for mirror-like reflections of the surrounding snow peaks on calm mornings. Entry is free and open access. Our hotel, Hotel Lake Side Inn, sits just a 2-minute walk away — so the lake is right on your doorstep.

About Sissu Lake

Sissu Lake is a calm, glacial-melt lake resting on the flat valley floor of Sissu, a small village in the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh. It sits at roughly 3,100 metres, ringed by meadows and framed by a wall of snow-capped peaks. The lake is not large — you can walk its edge in a leisurely loop — but its real draw is the water itself. On still mornings the surface turns into an almost perfect mirror, throwing back a flawless reflection of the white summits and blue sky above. That single, photogenic moment is what brings most travellers here.

Because it is fed by glacier and snowmelt, the lake is distinctly seasonal. Levels run high through summer and the post-monsoon months, while the dry, frozen spell of deep winter can partly freeze and shrink the water. Just across the Chandra river you can also pick out the towering ribbon of Sissu Waterfall (locally known as Palden Lhamo Dhar), tumbling down the far valley wall — a natural companion sight to the lake. For more of what the area offers, see our guide to things to do in Sissu.

Best time to visit the lake

For the famous reflections, time of day matters more than season. Aim to be at the water before 8 am, when the air is still and the surface is glassy. By mid-morning a light breeze usually ripples the lake and the mirror effect fades, so early risers are rewarded.

Across the year, late May to early October is the most comfortable window: the road over the Atal Tunnel is reliably open, meadows are green, and the seasonal adventure operators are running. Monsoon months (July–August) bring lush colour but also the chance of cloud and rain in the high valley. In winter the landscape turns starkly beautiful and snowbound, and the lake can partly freeze — gorgeous, but cold and weather-dependent. Tip: staying overnight nearby is the easiest way to actually catch the pre-8 am calm — day-trippers from Manali rarely arrive in time.
